Drinking Tequila

shot of tequilaMore often than not I hear people say, “Let’s take tequila shots at the bar” or “lets get messed up with tequila” as my friends in college used to say. Many times people get scared, nod their head, roll their eyes, and put frown in their face when I say “let’s get a bottle of tequila for the night.”

The problem lies beneath the stereotypical idea that tequila is of mixing some margaritas, or tequila sunrises, or just plainly take a shot and immediately chase down. But tequila is better than that, tequila is rich, exquisite, and complex liquor that can be appreciated by experiencing tequila tasting.

In Addition on the already mention problem idea, is the American portray of tequila as a drink of macho western cowboys, manly because of Hollywood or the personal bad experiences that people have had with bad tequila.

The bad experience comes from way too many “lick, slam and suck”, moments. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but there is a way to enjoy tequila by learning to drink tequila.

tequila cocktailThe traditional way to drink tequila is in a shot glass or a “caballito” as known in the tequila world.  Additionally, tequila is also served with ice, tonic water or club soda, and people call it “cuba” or “cubita”, primarily in Mexico and Mexican bar and restaurants in the U.S. however tequila is best appreciated at its fullest the natural way, I have personally drank tequila straight right out of the distilling pipes at the Don Julio, Centinela, and Cazadores factories in “Los Altos” region, the highlands in Mexico, where my family is from.

The traditional way is also the way is done in Mexico, with the salt and lime, but, it’s mostly by amateurs at tourists spots. The other way to drink tequila is learning to taste it.

By all means drink it as you wish, the important think is to enjoy. You should definitely try the different drinks and cocktails out there mixed with tequila.
